2020 Volkswagen Atlas vs 2020 Ford Explorer

Serving Farmington Hills, MI

The 2020 Volkswagen Atlas and 2020 Ford Explorer are both vehicles in one of the most competitive classes in the industry, which is that of midsize SUVs. But although competition is tough, the Volkswagen Atlas shines even brighter in 2020 with some new universally appealing updates. The Volkswagen Atlas is a popular top pick for a midsize SUV with its spacious cabin, cutting-edge technology, distinctive European styling influences, and overall impressive value. The Volkswagen Atlas comes loaded with more standard features than the 2020 Ford Explorer, including more safety equipment and USB ports. The Atlas can also easily accommodate eight, while the Explorer seats seven at most. The Atlas turns heads with its innovative style from the outside, which can be further customized based on the trim level you choose. Sporting the new Volkswagen infotainment system, the Atlas is ready for any road trip you take it on.

Style

With attractive styling and attention to detail, the Volkswagen Atlas is one car that turns heads everywhere you go. The 2020 Atlas comes loaded with style from the base level up. Automatic headlights are standard on the base S trim, while the SE, which is the next trim up, adds sunshades in the back. The Technology edition upgrades to 20-inch wheels. A hands-free liftgate is included on the top trims, and you'll get a panoramic sunroof, too. The Ford Explorer has a boxier, less innovative design than the Atlas. Automatic LED lights are not standard on the Explorer, and you can't get 20-inch wheels until the top trim. Sunshades are only available through packages.

Interior Design

The 2020 Volkswagen Atlas has three wide, roomy rows of seats that easily sit eight adult occupants. The 2020 Atlas features a versatile seating arrangement with split-folding seats and the option of captain's chairs on some trim levels. The 2020 Atlas has an overall high-quality interior design with top-notch materials. Two-zone climate control is standard, while you'll get three-zone climate control on the other trims. The Ford Explorer has a maximum seating arrangement for seven, but most trims seat six people at most. The Explorer has less space for people and less storage capacity, which makes long road trips less comfortable.

Safety & Technology

The Volkswagen Atlas starts off with an award-winning safety package and the innovative Volkswagen infotainment system that earns praise from consumers and critics. Bluetooth, smartphone pairing, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay are standard, and there are USB ports in all rows. The Explorer only has two standard USB ports, and it doesn't support smartphone pairing or include Bluetooth. The Explorer's controls are less intuitive, and its entertainment system is less modern than the one in the Atlas.
